Yo, Darkman X
ReplyDeleteYou should check out some Masaki Kobayashi movies, if you haven't already.
I'd recommend:
The Human Condition
Samurai Rebellion
Harakiri
'Kaidan' is a bonus if you enjoy artsy fartsy features.
Sure will check it out, man. And I watched those Godard films you suggested, and absolutely loved them! Have a couple more of them in queue to watch in the coming months. Thanks!
ReplyDelete"And I watched those Godard films you suggested, and absolutely loved them!"
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! I'm really glad you loved those Godard features, because those movies really connected with me right from the start.
I am curious to what you'll think of those Kobayashi films. You should e-mail me after you've seen them, or something.
I've always viewed Kobayashi as Kurosawa's evil deconstructionist brother. Kobayashi directed his features to be dark & cynical. I think the tone in his flicks is rawer, and all the "epic" elements are replaced by up-close & personal realism.
I know you don't dig Kurosawa, but perhaps you'll really enjoy Kobayashi's approach to cinema. So I'm curious to your opinions.
I'd recommend for you to start with "Harakiri". If you like "Harakiri", I'd say you should proceed with "the Human Condition" trilogy. If you like both, then you might enjoy the rest.
Peace & Cake be upon you, brother. :P
You should really get back on facebook, man. We can have a lot of lively discussion there. I don't have many friends there who are into films much so I'm at a loss to discuss it with anyone. Hope you come there.
ReplyDeleteHmm... I don't know about FB. I had this account active for a few months, but I felt FB was completely pointless, so I deactivated it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I don't really know what we would be discussing. It's not my intention to come off as a negative douche, but I'm not exactly a cinematic intellectual. I'm not even remotely knowledgeable in that field, really. I doubt I'd have anything interesting to bring to a table of discussion. All I have is an opinion, and I doubt that would give deeper insight into anything.
I like recommending stuff because I believe in Word of Mouth. But usually it's just: "Hey! Check this out, and don't leave until you've experienced the beauty of it all. This shit changed my way of thinking. Tell me what you thought afterwards." :)
I like checking in on you when I'm not doing anything else. I feel your passion, and it delights me that there are individuals out there feeling very strongly about art. People keep good art alive. I think it's immensely important to do so, especially since we're living in the so-called "Dark Ages". :)
Although, I would feel like a stupid, pretentious douche, if I started to randomly rant on FB.
